This films explores the emotional dimensions of that most vital aspect of surgical education, anatomy. In the years before the introduction of anaesthesia, anatomical experience was essential not only for a knowledge of the body’s structures, but also to enable surgeons to operate with confidence and decisiveness. Here we consider what impact this sometimes gruesome and illicit practice had on the emotional outlook of surgeons and their pupils. With Lauren Ryall-Stockton and Dr Michael Brown.
