Surgery & Emotion is organising a one-day workshop to explore the role of emotions in surgical practice, past and present. ‘Operating with Feeling’ will bring together surgeons, historians and policymakers to discuss the emotional experiences of surgery. It will be held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England on Friday 1 June 2018.

We are delighted to announce that our confirmed keynote speaker is Averil Mansfield MBE, who was professor of vascular surgery at St Mary’s in London and the UK’s first female professor of surgery.

The day will be divided into three sessions: 1. Stress, Burnout and Bullying; 2. Anxiety, Doubt and Grief; 3. Sympathy and Compassion. Each session will feature short presentations and breakout discussion groups, which will consider the opportunities and challenges of engaging with emotions in surgical education, training and practice.

We are finalising the programme and will post registration details soon. If you’d like us to keep you updated about the event please email us at surgeryandemotion@roehampton.ac.uk with ‘Workshop’ as your subject line.
